He filed a patent application for a duplex-style lamp on Aug. 12, 1922 gaining financial backing from Coleman Jones who operated the West Frankfort Pure Milk Co. in return for one-half the patent rights. The first lamps ca. 1922-23 were manufactured by a St. Louis tool and machine company under contract to Scoby. These first lamps were found to have a defect in the water dropper mechanism and the remaining lamps were withdrawn from sale. It’s not known if other lamps were ever manufactured. Scoby’s patent No. 1,567,682 was awarded on Dec. 29, 1925 nearly three years after the first lamps were manufactured. In the meantime, Scoby moved his family to Missouri in search of work. Clemmer reports that Samuel Scoby was killed in a rock fall in 1926 while working in the lead mines. See Clemmer, American Miners’ Carbide Lamps, p 84 and Thorpe, Carbide Light, pp 239-241)
